commute (通勤する) の語源が交換するだと知った

英語で commute という単語は、通勤するという意味の動詞だ。

一方で 数学では commutative law 交換法則 というように「交換可能である」というような意味で使う。

A diagram in a category C is said to commute if, for every pair of vertices X and Y, all the paths in the diagram from X to Y are equal, in the sense that each path in the diagram determines an arrow and these arrows are equal in C.

２つの意味にまったく関連性ががなさそうなので、気になって Google で “commute origin” と検索すると、commute の語源に「交換する」という古い英語があり、通勤用の回数券を commutation ticket と呼ぶようになったことから転じて「通勤する」という意味になったらしい。

late Middle English (in the sense ‘interchange (two things’)): from Latin commutare, from com- ‘altogether’ + mutare ‘to change’. commute (sense 1 of the verb) originally meant to buy and use a commutation ticket, a US term for a season ticket (because the daily fare is commuted to a single payment).
